Want to take on this project and re-key your own locks? Here’s a step by step pictured guide that can assist you and save you some time.
One of home owners major concerns is “who else has a key to my house?”. To control who has keys to your locks you need to rekey your locks, or to hire a locksmith to do it for you.
How to rekey a lock?[dropcap style="rounded"]1[/dropcap] Get a rekeying kit. This kit in the picture was sold at the Home Depot for about $12.00. You can find DIY rekeying kits online or at a hardware store.
Or you can use Google or any other major search engine to find it. Simply search for “DIY rekeying kit” and select your preferred supplier.[dropcap style="rounded"]2[/dropcap] Although it’s an obvious step, but we will write it down so we don’t skip any step. So.. remove the locks from your doors and release the lock cylinder.
[dropcap style="rounded"]3[/dropcap] Remove the cylinder back piece, than insert the original key and turn it about 45%.
[dropcap style="rounded"]6[/dropcap] Insert the NEW key and install the new pins so they will all be in a shear line.
Close the lock and re-install it on the door. Test your keys and… YOU’RE DONE!
